Why Do Braces Feel Tighter in Cold Weather?
If your braces seem to feel tighter during the winter, you’re not imagining it! Cold temperatures can make your teeth more sensitive, which makes the normal pressure from braces feel stronger than usual.

Some orthodontic wires are also designed to respond to temperature. In colder weather, they may feel a little firmer until they warm back up in your mouth. This is temporary and completely normal.

Cold air can also dry out your lips and cheeks, making brackets and wires feel more noticeable.

How to Stay Comfortable
Breathe through your nose when outside

Wear a scarf over your mouth in very cold weather

Use lip balm to prevent dryness

Stick to softer foods if teeth feel sore

Mild tightness in winter is usually just a sign your teeth are moving as planned. But if pain lasts more than a few days or something feels sharp or broken, give Dr Azizi a call —he is always happy to help! ❄️?
